[Feat. Karaoke Spiritual Center of Love], In Practice: Another Echo, Sculpture Center, Queens, NY, installation overview, 2018
[Feat. ] is a multi-series sculpture. It is a dropped ceiling that features specific bodies in specific spaces, hence [Feat. ], different subjects with each iteration, and their object-hoods. The first iteration of the lowered ceiling, made from acoustic speaker fabric and wood framing with a black and gold plexiglass chandelier that spins on a disco-motor.
In the Sculpture Center show the dropped ceiling featured my bust. There were two entrances, the main entrance was at my waist, and you had to duck under to enter. The second was in the back of the room at my neck. To accompany the ceiling, seen in this photo, a custom lounge unit shaped with eight unique seating panels made from pleather, my underwear, and mass produced prayer rugs are lined with LED lighting. Also, fourteen unique karaoke videos, made from the sound tracks of mostly Caribbean and South Asian pop stars, the videos capture the original Acoustic Sound Blanket suit performed in the location of a Richard Serra sculpture placed outside of The Modern, a contemporary and modern art museum in Ft. Worth, Texas. As a child I grew up in the metroplex of Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Denton, witnessing many modern art buildings and sculptures placed, and then there was me - in these videos I am seen under my blanket fighting and loving Richard Serra. The music chooses is in the nature of soldering and fighting for one’s existence, with love.
As one enters the room, ducking under to get in, if seated you must endure the shake, and the booty quake, of the sub-woofers placed inside the lounge unit, the cabinets. The tops of the cabinets eventually come off and are later placed on walls, still with the name Seats.
